Process Paper
When we learned what the History Day topic was for this year, we immediately thought about women throughout history. We deliberated on many subjects before we decided on Title IX, and the debate for women's sports in public schools. Athletics have been a part of our lives from a very young age. We are both very passionate about athletics, and our education. We were instantly interested in how women have recieved the opportunities they have now. This subject affects us today, and will for the rest of our lives.
Once our topic was decided, we began research in our school library. Even though we did not find specific information about our topic, we became more familiar with the time period. That slow but helpful time in our school library, had made it easier to understand our topic. Next, we turned to the local university's library. We found many periodicals and websites that had information on our topic. Using the microfilm section in the library, we discovered many courtcases, and the controversy in our topic.
Choosing a category was difficult. We had to find something that we could easily work on with our busy schedules. Creating a website seemed to be the best way to meet in the middle. Since the project could be done on the internet, we did not have to stress about not having time to work on it together. By using Weebly.com, we were able to work on our project when we were able to find the time.
Does Title IX give opportunities to women, and take opportinities away from men? Is Title IX crushing men's sports; Is is making opportunities between men and women equal? These are the questions we asked ourselves when relating to the History Day Theme: "Debate and Diplomacy." While researching this topic, we quickly realized that it will be a debate for years to come. It seems that it has been hard to find the right balance of equality between men and women in athletics.
